If you are running a business in Chennai and you want leads, you are probably asking the same question I get every week: “Should I use Google Ads or Meta Ads?”
The honest answer? Both. But if you are just starting out and have a limited budget, you need to know which one to start with.
I have spent the last 4+ years running ads on both platforms. I have wasted money on both. I have also made serious money on both. Let me walk you through the real differences.
The Big Difference: Intent vs. Interest
This is the most important thing to understand.
Google Ads is about people who are actively searching for something right now. They are typing “Google Ads agency in Chennai” or “cost per lead for real estate” into Google. They already know they want something. They just want to find it.
Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) is about showing ads to people who are scrolling. They are not looking for anything specific. They are just browsing. But they might be interested if you show them the right thing at the right time.
Here is a real example from my work:
A real estate client in Chennai had a budget of Rs.50,000 per month.
On Google Ads, they got 15 leads. Cost per lead was Rs.3,000. But 3 of those leads turned into actual property sales.
On Meta Ads, they got 50 leads. Cost per lead was Rs.1,000. But only 1 of those leads turned into a sale.
Google Ads: 15 leads × Rs.3,000 = Rs.45,000 spend. 3 sales at Rs.30 lakh each = Rs.90 lakh revenue. Profit = Rs.90 lakh – Rs.45,000 = Huge.
Meta Ads: 50 leads × Rs.1,000 = Rs.50,000 spend. 1 sale at Rs.30 lakh = Rs.30 lakh revenue. Profit = Rs.30 lakh – Rs.50,000 = Still good, but way less.
Google gave fewer leads but better quality.
This is not random. This is how the two platforms work.
Google Ads: The Hunter
Google Ads is for when someone is already looking for you.
Best for:
- High-intent searches (“buy now,” “near me,” “urgent fix needed”)
- Service businesses (plumbers, AC repair, real estate agents)
- E-commerce (people searching for specific products)
- B2B services (people researching solutions)
- Lead generation (people filling forms)
Cost: Rs.300 to Rs.5,000+ per click (depending on your industry)
Real example: A plumber in Chennai using Google Ads for “emergency plumber near me” gets calls from people who need a plumber right now. High quality. High conversion.
Speed to results: 2-3 days (leads start coming in fast)
Who it works for: Anyone with a high-ticket service or urgent customer need.
Meta Ads: The Influencer
Meta Ads is for when someone does not know they need you yet, but they probably do.
Best for:
- Ecommerce (impulse buying, visual products)
- Online courses and coaching
- Software as a Service (SaaS)
- Personal services (fitness, beauty, wellness)
- Awareness campaigns (you want people to know you exist)
- Retargeting (people who already know about you)
Cost: Rs.50 to Rs.1,000+ per click (usually cheaper than Google)
Real example: An online fitness course using Meta Ads to target people interested in weight loss. They see a nice before-and-after photo, click, and buy a course. Impulse decision.
Speed to results: 1-2 weeks (takes time to find the right audience)
Who it works for: Businesses selling things that people buy on emotion or impulse.
The Real Difference: Search vs. Scroll
Think about it this way.
Google is like having a shop in a busy market. People are already walking around looking for shops. You just need to make sure they find your shop first.
Meta is like having a billboard on the highway. Most people are not looking for a billboard. But if your billboard is interesting, they might remember your shop next time they need something.
Neither is better. They just work differently.
When to Use Google Ads (Start Here if…)
You should start with Google Ads if:
1. You have a service or product that people actively search for.
Real estate agents, plumbers, electricians, consultants, doctors, lawyers. People search for these things every day. They want to buy right now.
2. You can handle high cost per lead.
Google costs more. But the people are more serious. If your product makes a lot of money per sale, Google is worth it.
3. You want leads fast.
Google Ads leads come immediately. You can start testing campaigns in 24 hours.
4. You have limited budget.
If you have Rs.30,000 per month, Google Ads will give you more qualified leads than Meta. 5 good leads are better than 30 bad ones.
5. You are in a boring industry.
Real estate, business consulting, accounting, law. Nobody gets excited about these things. They search for them out of necessity. Google is perfect for this.
When to Use Meta Ads (Start Here if…)
You should start with Meta Ads if:
1. You sell something fun or visual.
Fashion, fitness, beauty, food, travel, online courses. People want to see pictures before they buy. Meta is perfect for this.
2. You want cheap leads for volume.
If you need 100 leads and can close 5%, you want the cheapest leads possible. Meta gives you volume at low cost.
3. You are targeting younger audiences.
People under 35 spend way more time on Instagram and Facebook than on Google Search. If your audience is young, Meta is better.
4. You have a good landing page.
Meta drives traffic to your website. If your landing page is good (fast, clear, easy to buy), Meta converts well.
5. You want to build brand awareness.
Some businesses just want people to know they exist. Retargeting on Meta is perfect for this. Show your ads to people who visited your site before.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Head-to-Head Comparison
| Factor | Google Ads | Meta Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Cost Per Lead | Rs.500 – Rs.5,000+ | Rs.100 – Rs.1,000 |
| Lead Quality | High intent, serious buyers | Lower intent, impulse buyers |
| Speed to Results | 2-3 days | 1-2 weeks |
| Best Industries | Services, B2B, real estate, local | Ecommerce, courses, SaaS, impulse |

| Mobile Performance | Excellent | Excellent |
Real-World Example: My Client’s Story
I had a client selling digital marketing services (like me). They had Rs.1,00,000 per month budget.
Month 1: They tried only Meta Ads. Got 200 leads. Only 2 converted to clients. Spent Rs.1,00,000. ROI was negative.
Month 2: They split budget 50-50 (Rs.50,000 Google, Rs.50,000 Meta).
Google: 10 leads, 3 turned into clients. Meta: 100 leads, 1 turned into a client.
Result: 4 clients from Rs.1,00,000 spend. This was profitable.
Month 3: They allocated 70% Google, 30% Meta (Rs.70,000 Google, Rs.30,000 Meta).
Google: 15 leads, 5 turned into clients. Meta: 50 leads, 1 turned into a client.
Result: 6 clients from Rs.1,00,000 spend. Much better.
The lesson? Google worked better for their business. But they still kept Meta running because Meta provided volume and awareness.
How to Decide: A Simple Formula
Step 1: What are people actively searching for in your industry?
If the answer is yes, start with Google Ads. If the answer is no, start with Meta Ads.
Step 2: How much profit per customer?
If it is Rs.10,000+, Google is worth the cost. If it is Rs.1,000-5,000, split between both. If it is Rs.1,000 or less, Meta is better.
Step 3: How quickly do you need leads?
If you need leads in the next 2 weeks, start with Google. If you have time to test and optimize (4-6 weeks), Meta is fine.
Step 4: Do you have a good landing page?
If yes, Meta works great. If no, start with Google (people are already looking, so even a basic page converts).
My Honest Recommendation
If you have never run ads before, start with Google Ads.
Why? Because you will see results faster, and the leads are more qualified. You will learn what works and what does not in 2-3 weeks. Then you can expand to Meta.
If you have been running ads and are profitable on Google, add Meta to the mix. Use Meta for awareness and retargeting. Use Google for direct lead generation.
If you are in ecommerce or selling digital products, start with Meta. Your customers buy on emotion, and Meta is perfect for that.
The Combination Strategy (Best Approach)
Here is what I recommend for most Chennai businesses:
Week 1-2: Run only Google Ads. Budget: Rs.30,000-50,000. Track what works.
Week 3-4: If Google is profitable, keep it running. Add Meta Ads. Budget: Rs.20,000. Test different audiences.
Week 5-6: Optimize based on data. Increase budget for whichever platform converts better.
Ongoing: Use Google for lead generation. Use Meta for awareness and retargeting to past visitors.
This is the safest approach for beginners.
Common Mistakes People Make
Google Ads Mistake #1: Targeting too broad. If you are a real estate agent in Chennai, do not target all of India. Target only Chennai and nearby areas. This saves money and gets better leads.
Google Ads Mistake #2: Using generic keywords. Do not bid on “real estate” (too expensive, too generic). Bid on “2 BHK flats in Velachery” (specific, cheaper, better leads).
Meta Ads Mistake #1: Showing ads to everyone. Do not target all 18-65 year olds. Target specific demographics: “Women, 30-45, interested in fitness, living in Chennai.”
Meta Ads Mistake #2: Using bad creative. Your ad image or video is everything on Meta. A blurry or boring image = wasted budget.
One More Thing: Combine Google and Meta for Maximum Results
The smartest businesses do this:
- Run Google Ads to get leads
- Track which ads work best
- Create Meta ads with the same angle
- Use Meta to reach people before they Google you
This way, you own both the search and the scrolling experience.
Quick Checklist: Which Platform to Start With?
- [ ] Do people actively search for what I sell? → Google Ads
- [ ] Do I make Rs.5,000+ profit per customer? → Google Ads
- [ ] Am I selling something visual/impulse? → Meta Ads
- [ ] Do I need volume over quality? → Meta Ads
- [ ] Am I in real estate, services, or B2B? → Google Ads
- [ ] Am I in ecommerce or online courses? → Meta Ads
- [ ] Do I need leads in 2 weeks? → Google Ads
- [ ] Do I have 4-6 weeks to test? → Meta Ads
If you checked more Google boxes, start with Google. If you checked more Meta boxes, start with Meta.
If it is 50-50, do both but start with Google.
Wrapping Up
Google Ads and Meta Ads are not competitors. They are partners. Google works for people actively looking. Meta works for people who do not know they are looking yet.
The best businesses use both. They use Google for direct leads. They use Meta for awareness and retargeting.
If you have never run ads before, start with Google. You will see results faster and learn what works. After 2-3 weeks, add Meta.
If you are already running ads and want to scale, make sure you are using both platforms correctly.
Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Use both.
