If you run Google Ads or Meta Ads, you probably ask yourself the same question every week: Am I paying too much per lead?
The answer is never simple. A good cost per lead for real estate is terrible for edtech. A cost per lead that kills it on Meta might be wasteful on Google.
But you need a baseline. You need to know if you are wasting money or if you are actually competitive.
I have spent the last few weeks collecting data from actual campaigns across different Indian industries, and I am going to give you the real numbers.
The Honest Truth About Cost Per Lead
First, let me be clear: these numbers are benchmarks. Not targets. Not minimums. Not maximums.
A benchmark is just the middle ground of what everyone else is paying. If your cost per lead is higher, it does not mean your campaign is failing. It means you might need to optimize. Or you might be targeting a different audience. Or your offer is different.
What matters more than the absolute number is whether your cost per lead converts into revenue.
I had a client paying Rs.2,000 per lead for real estate. Sounds expensive, right? But each lead converted to a Rs.30 lakh property sale. So Rs.2,000 per lead made perfect sense.
Another client was getting leads for Rs.200 each but only 1 in 50 converted into a paying customer. Their actual cost per paying customer was Rs.10,000.

- Google Ads CPL: Rs.800 – Rs.2,500

Why is Google more expensive? Because people searching “buy property in Chennai” or “2 BHK in Bangalore” are high-intent. They cost more but convert better.

The Platform Question: Where Are Leads Cheapest?
Meta (Facebook + Instagram) is usually the cheapest because there is so much inventory. Google is usually more expensive because the intent is higher.
YouTube and LinkedIn are in the middle. WhatsApp is insanely cheap if you have a warm audience.
How to Reduce Your Cost Per Lead
1. Tighten Your Audience – Do not target everyone. Target people who actually match your customer profile.
2. Improve Your Ad Copy and Creative – Bad ads are expensive ads. If your click-through rate is 0.5%, you are paying more per qualified lead.
3. Optimize Your Landing Page – This is the biggest one. A slow or confusing landing page loses leads. A/B test everything.
4. Use Retargeting – Retargeting is 70% cheaper than cold traffic. Abuse it.
5. Leverage WhatsApp and Email – Once you have a lead, stop spending on ads to convert them. Use WhatsApp and email follow-ups.
Wrapping Up
Cost per lead in India varies wildly by industry. Real estate and B2B SaaS are expensive. E-commerce and local services are cheap. Meta is usually cheaper than Google. WhatsApp is cheapest if you already have warm audiences.
But the number itself means nothing without context. A Rs.2,000 CPL that converts to a Rs.30 lakh sale is a deal. A Rs.200 CPL that never converts is a disaster.
Focus on two things: Is my cost per lead trending down over time? (optimization) Does my cost per lead convert into revenue? (ROI)
If both are yes, you are golden. If both are no, you have a real problem.
